THE ROOSTER-COCKEREL-KUMANETS candle set

Ceramic items that were, and still are, found in almost every home in our village – Vasylkiv majolica. My mum gave a cockerel like this to my dad back in 1979.
I’d grown so used to these Kumanets roosters that I thought everyone had them. Especially when you’re a little girl and there’s simply nothing else to do but study the patterns on the rugs and the flowers on the crockery in your grandmother’s sideboard – and whether you like it or not, you remember such things for the rest of your life.

And I would like to say that I’m glad everyone now knows about these roosters, were it not for the circumstances… The rooster with the cupboard has now taken on entirely different meanings… quite unlike those in my grandmother’s sideboard.

I really want these ceramic figurines—symbols so dear to my heart—to be in every home where the Ukrainian spirit lives! The Ukrainian soul.
